Piano Tuning

Piano tuning services available in Suffolk, for all stringed keyboard instruments, including grand and upright pianos, harpsichords, clavichords and square pianos.
The tuning is carried out to A440 Hz(C523.3Hz) in Equal Temperament, whenever possible. If appropriate and/ or requested, tuning to Historic temperaments can be performed.

It is recommended for your piano to be tuned twice a year, in order to ensure the best sound by improving the tone of each note, and the piano as a whole.
Indeed, the benefits of a two yearly tuning visit compared with the cost of weekly lessons, is a small price to pay, as your piano’s sound will be revived.

During tuning, the action is observed, thus enabling minor adjustments, if necessary. You will be advised on any additional work needed, so as to improve your instrument.

What causes a piano to go out of tune?

Pianos go out of tune, whether regularly played or not. Thus it is recommended, even for pianos not often used, to have a yearly tuning session.
As temperature, and air humidity, changes with the seasons, the soundboard of the piano absorbs and leaches humidity.
As this ‘membrane’ is fixed around the edges, it causes the middle of the soundboard to increase and decrease in height, resulting in the strings to slightly increase or decrease in tension, therefore causing the piano to go out of tune.
